This stunning image of the centre of our galaxy, the Milky Way, is captured here by a collaboration between NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory. It was suggested to us by astronomy blogger and space enthusiast Kate Arkless Gray. Different colours have been used to represent each telescope’s contribution: Yellow shows observations of stars being born by the Hubble. Red represents the infared observations of Spitzer, the radiation and winds from stars create glowing clouds of dust. And blue / violet signifies the X-ray observations of Chandra; X-rays are emited by gas heated to millions of degrees by stellar explosions and by outflows from the supermassive black hole in the centre of the galaxy. The centre of the galaxy can be seen within the bright white region to the right of the image. Another bright blue spot on the left side is emission from a double star system containing either a neautron star or a black hole.
